Fair chase principles

Fair chase is the concept of giving the animal a reasonable chance to escape. It emphasizes respect for the quarry and the hunt itself.

No Unfair Advantage

Hunters do not use methods or technology that eliminate the animal’s ability to avoid the hunter (e.g., spotlighting at night, hunting from vehicles, or using drones to locate animals).

Wild Free-Ranging Game

Fair chase applies to animals living in a natural environment, not confined in enclosures that remove their chance to evade.

Physical and
Skill-Based Challenge

The hunter relies on personal skill, patience, and knowledge of the land and species, rather than shortcuts that guarantee success.

Adherence to Law and Regulation

Following all legal requirements around seasons, bag limits, weapons, and hunting zones.

Ethical hunting principles

Ethics in hunting go beyond legality. They reflect the hunter’s values and respect for nature. Core principles include:

Respect for the Animal

  • Aim for quick, clean, humane kills by being proficient with chosen equipment.

  • Never waste meat; use as much of the animal as possible.

Respect for Conservation

  • Support wildlife management and habitat protection efforts.

  • Understand that ethical hunting contributes to sustainable populations.

  • Abide by quotas and seasons designed to balance ecosystems.

Respect for Land and Property

  • Always obtain permission before entering private land.

  • Leave the land as you found it, minimizing disturbance to the environment.

Respect for Other Hunters and the Public

  • Practice safety at all times.

  • Share the outdoors courteously.

  • Set a positive example to non-hunters by acting responsibly.

Integrity and Responsibility

  • Do not take shots beyond your ability.

  • Do not falsify records, trophies, or experiences.

  • Take responsibility for your actions in the field.
